Small Business Principle: Two is One

Have you ever heard of the phrase “two is one and one is none”? It’s a popular saying among the armed forces and it works similar to the “better to have it and not need it than to need it and not have it” saying.

It also works well to describe the importance of business continuity.

You see, I’ve always had one laptop I do all my work on. If anything happened to my laptop, I would be unable to serve my clients. (“One is none.”) Days or even weeks could go by without a way for me to help my clients, and that could put unnecessary strain on them and their businesses.

So I recently purchased a business-class Chromebook. (“Two is one.”) 90% of what I do for my clients is online — software, websites, etc. — and the Chromebook is built around all things internet. This has given me another way to ensure that my clients won’t suffer if my main laptop gets broken, has been stolen, or completely crashes.

Besides being great for my business continuity plan, my Chromebook is perfect for working away from my main office. My laptop can stay on the docking station, and I can work where I want. (It’s especially great for working from the couch on the weekend.)
