Embracing Automation to Keep Productivity High Post-Surgery

Discover the essential tools and strategies that have helped me streamline communications, including voice-to-text solutions and AI-powered email responses. Learn about the Stream Deck, a device that has revolutionized my workflow, and explore the benefits of our co-building model with clients, and more.

Last Tuesday, I underwent surgery to repair two rotator cuffs, reconnect my bicep, and address some bone spurs exacerbated by arthritis. Though I'm on the mend and pain has subsided, I'm now navigating the challenge of working one-handed, as my arm must remain in a sling to protect the repaired muscles.

Good news is, my productivity hasn’t really taken a hit! Before the surgery, I set up my workspace to minimize any dip in productivity. This newsletter shares the tools and tricks that have helped me continue to work effectively and support my family, despite my temporary handicap.

Streamlining Communications

Voice-to-Text Solutions: I’ve been using voice typing on my Windows machine and Google Docs. With a quality microphone, it transcribes my spoken words in real time—a method I've used to write emails for quite a while now.

Email Response AI: I also implemented a setup that integrates ChatGPT AI with my email. I dictate ideas and AI craft them into emails or responses for online interactions. This tool not only speeds up the process but improves readability, as ChatGPT acts as a proofreader for my drafts.

Enhancing Workflow with Stream Deck

A tool that has revolutionized my workflow is the Stream Deck. It’s a programmable device with buttons that I've set up to open my most-used apps and websites. With a tap of a button, I can manage my tasks—like adjusting app volumes—one-handedly. I picked up the 32-button XL version from Best Buy for about $200, and it’s been a game-changer.

Co-Building with Clients

Our co-building model involves clients more directly in building automations. This has been particularly helpful post-surgery, as clients assist with typing during our sessions. This collaboration not only facilitates the technical side of things but also enhances our relational engagement.

4. Using Text Expander

Text Expander has been a staple in my toolkit for a couple of years. It corrects my spelling and offers shortcuts, which has been invaluable for one-handed typing.
