Today, I'm shaking things up a bit. I found myself inspired after a particularly enlightening conversation with a potential client yesterday. 

This call, a referral from a close friend, ended with an unexpected twist that got me thinking deeply about the role of core values in both our personal lives and our businesses.

Towards the end of our discussion, it came to light that this individual was also considering another expert for his business automation needs. 

It was here that I shared one of my core values: Outcome Independence.

To me, this means focusing on how I can be of help, regardless of whether the assistance comes from me or someone else. I even went as far as to outline scenarios where opting for the other consultant would be more beneficial for him. His response? "Wow, that's refreshing."

This exchange sparked a reflection on the core values I've pinned up on my office whiteboard. It's these principles that guide me, and today, I'm excited to share them with you, hoping it'll inspire you to articulate and embrace your own core values for both your personal development and your business.

Core values are the fundamental beliefs and guiding principles that dictate behavior and can help people understand the difference between right and wrong. They are the essence of a person's identity and the heartbeat of a business, shaping decisions, behaviors, and interactions with others. They serve as an unwavering compass, guiding us through the complexities of life and the ever-changing business landscape.

Core Values as a Business Imperative

In business, core values are more than just catchy phrases on a website; they are a reflection of how you conduct your business and how you wish to be perceived.

They're about the legacy you want to leave and the impression you make on every person who interacts with your brand. Ideally, your core values lead to your business being remembered for its character, even if the specifics of what you do are forgotten.

Think of it as someone saying, "That person was incredibly kind and fair. I can't recall exactly what they do, but they sure left a positive impact."

Identifying Your Core Values

Identifying your core values starts with introspection. Sit down in a quiet space, armed with nothing but a piece of paper, and reflect on what you and your business stand for. What principles do you want to guide your actions?

For me, refining my core values was a journey that even involved seeking clarity from ChatGPT, after pinpointing the qualities and standards I wanted to uphold.

Remember, core values are not just about what you do, but more importantly, who you are and who you aspire to be. They are the foundation upon which successful, resilient, and ethical businesses are built.
